Shopify product description examples, with SEO titles and descriptions

Six product description examples for Shopify stores, from candles to tote bags, each with a matching SEO title and meta description, and how to set them in Shopify.

A Shopify product page has two pieces of text that do most of the work. The product description is what a shopper reads on your page. The SEO title and meta description are what they see in Google before they click.

Below are six examples, each with all three written together, then the Shopify rules they follow and where to edit them. The brands are made up.

What every example below has in common

Shopify's own advice is to describe your products in detail and, if you resell, not to use the manufacturer's exact description (Shopify Help: adding keywords). Each example follows the same simple pattern:

  • One opening sentence that says what it is and who it's for.
  • Bullets with the facts a buyer checks: size, material, care, what's included.
  • A last line on delivery or returns, if you have something worth saying.

Example 1: a candle

A hand-poured candle that smells like fresh figs and strong black tea, with a little cedar underneath. For anyone who wants a warm scent that isn't sweet.

  • 8 oz soy wax in an amber glass jar with a wooden lid
  • About 45 hours of burn time
  • Cotton wick
  • Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each burn

Ships within 2 business days.

SEO title (43 characters): Fig and Black Tea Candle, 8 oz | Harrowgate

Meta description (130 characters): Hand-poured candle with fig, black tea and a hint of cedar. 8 oz amber jar, about 45 hours of burn time. Ships in 2 business days.

Example 2: a T-shirt

A boxy, heavyweight T-shirt that keeps its shape after washing. Cut slightly long, so it works tucked or untucked.

  • 240 gsm organic cotton
  • Pre-washed, so it won't shrink much
  • Sizes XS to XXL, with a size chart in the photos
  • Wash cold, dry flat

Free returns within 30 days.

SEO title (50 characters): Heavyweight Organic Cotton T-Shirt, Oat | Fernhall

Meta description (132 characters): A boxy heavyweight T-shirt in 240 gsm organic cotton. Pre-washed, so it won't shrink much. Sizes XS to XXL, free returns in 30 days.

Example 3: a mug

A 12 oz stoneware mug with a speckled oat glaze and a handle wide enough for three fingers. Each one is made in small batches, so the speckles vary a little.

  • Holds 12 oz (about 350 ml)
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe
  • 9 cm tall, 8.5 cm across

SEO title (42 characters): Speckled Stoneware Mug, 12 oz | Hollowfern

Meta description (120 characters): A 12 oz stoneware mug with a speckled oat glaze and a wide handle. Made in small batches. Dishwasher and microwave safe.

Example 4: earrings

Small sterling silver leaves that catch the light without being heavy. Easy to wear every day, and they come gift boxed.

  • Sterling silver, handmade
  • 3 cm drop
  • Hypoallergenic hooks
  • Free delivery

SEO title (45 characters): Sterling Silver Leaf Drop Earrings | Wrenmoor

Meta description (130 characters): Handmade sterling silver leaf earrings, 3 cm long, on hypoallergenic hooks. Light enough for all-day wear. Gift boxed, ships free.

Example 5: a dog collar

A waxed canvas collar that wipes clean after muddy walks, with brass hardware that won't rust.

  • Waxed cotton canvas, water resistant
  • Solid brass buckle and D-ring
  • Four sizes from 25 to 60 cm, measured around the neck

SEO title (41 characters): Waxed Canvas Dog Collar, Olive | Barrowby

Meta description (121 characters): A waxed canvas dog collar with a solid brass buckle and D-ring. Four sizes from 25 to 60 cm. Wipe clean, water resistant.

Example 6: a tote bag

A large everyday tote in recycled cotton canvas, big enough for a laptop and the shopping.

  • Recycled cotton canvas
  • Inside pocket for keys and a phone
  • 28 cm handles, long enough for the shoulder
  • Holds a 15 inch laptop
  • Machine washable at 30 degrees

SEO title (42 characters): Recycled Canvas Tote Bag, Large | Saltmere

Meta description (127 characters): A large tote in recycled cotton canvas with an inside pocket and 28 cm handles. Holds a 15 inch laptop. Machine washable at 30.

Write the description, the SEO title and the meta description together, so they say the same thing.

How to write the Shopify SEO title and description

Shopify gives clear guidance on both (Shopify Help: adding keywords).

SEO title (page title):

  • It's the clickable link shoppers see in search results.
  • Make it unique and descriptive for each product.
  • Put your keywords near the beginning.
  • Keep it to 60 characters or fewer. You can enter up to 70, but longer titles get shortened in results.

Meta description:

  • About 160 characters is recommended.
  • Write it in natural phrases, not a list of keywords.
  • Longer text is shortened in results.

A useful order for the meta description is: what it is, its most important detail, then one practical reason to buy from you, such as delivery or returns. Every example above follows that order. YelloShelf writes both fields for your product page in the same way, so you start from a draft rather than a blank box.

Where to edit them in Shopify

  1. 1In your Shopify admin, open Products and click the product.
  2. 2Scroll down to Search engine listing preview.
  3. 3Click Edit website SEO.
  4. 4Enter the page title and meta description, and check the URL handle.

If you're adding a lot of products, do this as you create each one, while the details are fresh.

The product title and URL handle

Shopify uses the product Title as the main heading (H1) on the page, so it should be the plain name of the product, like "Fig and Black Tea Candle, 8 oz", not a slogan.

The URL handle can't contain spaces, so use dashes between words, like /products/fig-black-tea-candle. Keep it short and descriptive.

Image alt text

Alt text describes an image for shoppers using screen readers and for search engines. Shopify's own example is "Men's waterproof hiking boots". Describe what's in the photo in a few plain words. Don't stuff it with keywords.

Common mistakes

  • The same meta description on every product. Shopify asks for a unique title for each page, and the same logic applies to descriptions.
  • Copying the supplier's text. It's on every other store selling the item. A YelloShelf draft is written from your own photo, so it starts out different.
  • Keyword lists. "candle, soy candle, fig candle, best candle" reads badly in results and Shopify advises against it.
  • Promises you can't keep. Only mention delivery times or returns you actually offer.

For the wider method behind the descriptions, see our guide on how to write a product description for a website.

Quick checklist

  • Write the description, SEO title and meta description together.
  • Give every product its own meta description.
  • Write your own text instead of copying the supplier's.
  • Keep keyword lists out of titles and descriptions.
  • Add plain alt text to every image.
  • Only promise delivery times or returns you actually offer.

Write Shopify product pages with YelloShelf

YelloShelf drafts the whole product page from one photo: the product title, description and bullets, a suggested price based on what's already selling, and the Google search title and meta description for your own store's product page. It also makes product images and social posts with captions and hashtags for Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook and X.

YelloShelf doesn't publish to Shopify. You check each draft, change anything that isn't right, and paste it into your admin yourself. If you sell on marketplaces too, YelloShelf writes listings for those, with images sized for each one.

No subscription or free trial. Pay as you go credit packs from $10, with a 7-day money-back guarantee on your first purchase.

FAQ

How long should a Shopify product description be?

There's no fixed length. Shopify recommends describing your products in detail, so aim for enough to answer a buyer's main questions: what it is, what it's made of, size, care and delivery. A short opening paragraph plus four to six bullets works for most products.

How long should a Shopify SEO title be?

Shopify recommends 60 characters or fewer, with your keywords near the beginning. You can enter up to 70 characters, but longer titles are shortened in search results.

How long should a Shopify meta description be?

Shopify recommends about 160 characters, written in natural phrases rather than a list of keywords. Longer descriptions are shortened in search results.

Where do I edit the SEO title and description in Shopify?

Open the product in your Shopify admin, scroll to the Search engine listing preview section, and click Edit website SEO. You can change the page title, meta description and URL handle there.

Can I use the manufacturer's description on Shopify?

Shopify advises against it. If you resell products, it recommends writing your own description rather than using the manufacturer's exact text, because the same text appears on many other sites.
